To Guanajay, more love.

Our national apostle José Martí used to say … “Helping those who need it is not only part of our duty, but also of happiness.”
And it is thus, to that extent, in which workers from TC Mariel in a humanitarian act made donations of essential items to be delivered to hospitals.
On this occasion, the articles were sent to the José Ramón Martínez Provincial Pediatric Hospital located in the municipality of Guanajay, which was attended on behalf of the workers’ group, the representative of the union section of TC Mariel as well as the secretary of the C / B of the UJC and other specialists from our company to deliver the items offered by our workers.
“Grateful for such important and beautiful gesture, which in these times is very necessary and even more for the children that are hospitalized,” said the director of the Pediatric Hospital, who enthusiastically welcomed our staff on this day full of love and solidarity.
In the same way, they approached the project “To Guanajay, more love”, led by Alejandro Lóriga Santos, journalist and leader of this work, where other articles were delivered, which would be destined for the elderly. “Thank you very much for your collaboration with this project, many of our old people will appreciate it”, stated the young journalist, feeling excited to see that also the users of the Zed Mariel, as well as our company in particular, joined this activity responding to this municipality, “yes, to Guanajay and for Guanajay, more love.”

Cuba is not alone

Our country receives solidarity aid from sister nations, as another expression of fraternity with the island and a way of contributing to face the health and economic crisis resulting from the current epidemiological situation and the effects of the U.S. embargo in pandemic times.

In the last period, TC Mariel has received more than seven vessels with donations from countries such as Venezuela, Mexico and Nicaragua. The operations carried out have been decisive in getting the goods to their final destination.

Strong ties of solidarity and brotherhood

Given the difficult circumstances that our country is experiencing in facing the COVID-19 and the impact derived from the intensification of the blockade, we are receiving the solidarity help of sister nations as we were expected.

A food donation from Nicaragua arrived on the afternoon of August 6 th  at our port on the ship Augusto César Sandino, which had a load of 30 containers on board, as a reliable proof of the cooperation of its government with the Cuban people.

The terminal is very proud for being part of this moment and to contribute with our actions to the realization of such a noble and humanitarian contribution.

Daurin en el Manitou

Youth and expertise

With great care and dedication, everything is possible, you just have to propose it, you have to be clear about the proposed goals and also to trust in how much you can achieve. Daurin Rodríguez Barreto is only 28 years old, and he has gone through almost all the equipment of the terminal. While he continues immersed in the inexhaustible path of learning, which he does not renounce, he shares his knowledge and in a short time he will become an instructor.

“I found out through a friendship that a course will be opened to train light equipment operators (Prime Movers), and I could see a great project in TC Mariel, with a promising future. When I arrived there was a huge line; they requested category F – the one corresponding to construction, agricultural and industrial equipment – and I had the light car category. So, I asked for a chance and I promised to take it out; in two or three weeks I did it and when they called me, I already had it.

“My objective was the entrance to the company, no matter the kind of work they will assign me, but I wanted to be part of this group. I really need to work, to start a family, and to have a home. This is how my journey began,” says this young man from Quivicán, Mayabeque province, whom settled in Mariel land as result of the love.

After completing the course for operating Prime Movers and forklifts, he joined the empty handler container course, and the latter one was the direct access to the entrance to our center. “I managed to master it well and for me it was like the catapult for knowing the rest. I love the Side Loader-as it is also known-, I feel comfortable working on it, besides this is the equipment that I have operated more. I never get stressed even if as part of the operations there is an overflow of trucks; on the contrary I feel much better”, he adds.

Motivated in having more knowledge, the RTG crane also caught his attention. “They made me the proposal and without hesitation I said yes. It is quieter, you can breathe, as it is said”.

Then he would come to the STS, where he has remained for more than two years. “When I entered the company, the first classes were given to us on the dock. I looked around and I thought: you have to be good enough to handle one of those cranes! But I never imagined that one day I would be operator A of port equipment.

“For me it is a challenge, because it is an easy equipment. You have to know how to work it well, with dexterity, precision and security. It is complex, it has more revolutions, and it is more dangerous because of the height, the balance, the movement of the ship … It is a fast-moving equipment, in constant motion. At first it impacted me; besides its height, the number of meters of cable slowed me down a bit, knowing when to put the load on and when to remove it”, explains Daurin.

“Both the empty handler container and the STS depend on you. If you stop, the whole process stops. They are two very strong equipment. I just need to do have a training course on the RMG crane, my preparation is already planned, once I achieve it I would become an integral operator, which has been my dream since I began to travel through the different equipment.

“I have tried to be like a sponge, from what I have learned from many workers, first by observing, and then by practicing. Every equipment requires concentration. When you come to work you have to leave your problems at home, be focused and do everything as it should be done”, he points out.

Daurin has been training as an instructor for more than six months. “They make me the proposal and I love challenges. While I train other workers I learn a lot from them too… My work has made me a more responsible person. I always try to be very carefully just to avoid mistakes. Thanks to that, I have managed to achieve several goals, both personally and professionally”.

Now his five-month-old daughter Lia Samay is also his “inspiration to move on and look to the future. I take what I have and what I have achieved so much, because I know how much it means to me and to my family. Following my parents’ advice I try to do the best I can every day and to try harder and harder. I thank all the people who have helped me and taught me, guiding my path at TC Mariel”.

Each June 14th we celebrate the Maritime Port Worker Day

With the commitment of maintaining the vitality in the operations, the port workers celebrate their day on June 14th, convinced of the relevance of the undertaken work and also of the essential contribution to the country’s economy, in challenging times marked by the impact of COVID-19.

The team of more than 500 workers from Mariel Container Terminal S.A. ensure the    the compliance of  the planned hygienic and sanitary measures in each job position, as part of the confrontation of the pandemic, which has favored the continuity of the services provided and the satisfaction of the clients’ needs.

Safety and health at work is a premise for workers of the sector, who focus on enhancing the productivity in the extraction, loading and unloading of containers that arrive at the port enclave.

The date is suitable to remember the struggle traditions of the workers in the sector, before and after the revolutionary triumph, as well as the undertaken labor feats, guided by the spirit of the historical leader of the sector Aracelio Iglesias Díaz.

United: We make Cuba

We, workers from Mariel Container Terminal join ourselves to the celebration of this important date May 1st, being aware of the relevance of the work undertaken from different work settings, and of the efforts made to contribute to the economic development of the nation, in times marked by the scourge of a pandemic that has transformed the world.

With the slogan “United: We make Cuba”, this time the commemoration of the great meeting of the proletariat takes place virtually. On this unique day – a reason for joy and celebration – preceded by the days of the 8th Party Congress, we ratify our commitment to the revolutionary process and our willingness to move forward. Port workers continue being the protagonists of the assigned tasks, especially in moments that are as crucial as those we are living in, given the impact of COVID-19.

In the midst of this scenario, we face great challenges as part of updating the economic and social model of the socialist development, in which we are immersed in, in this decisive battle, the responsibility and commitment of the union movement is fundamental for moving forward our economy.

“I said yes without a doubt”

The neighborhood’s doctor came to our house and asked us if we wanted to take part in the clinical trial of “Soberana 02″. We agreed. Four days after we visited the doctor’s office to have a health check. They controlled our blood pressure and our weight, we had a rapid Covid test done and they asked us about our medical records”, said Ridel Rivero Martinez, truck driver at TC Mariel, resident of Diez de Octubre, La Habana.

The next day my son and wife were inoculated, as they don’t suffer from any pre-existing desease. Because of being an hypertensive patient I was part of another group, and I got the first dose three days after, on March 15th; the second dose will be on the 12th of April and the next one, on the 10th of may. I say yes without a doubt because I am father of three children, and they must be the priority. Now, we must wait and keep being careful”.

An enterprising woman

Yudalys is one of the women who believes in professional improvement as a way to promote knowledge.

With the boom of the Special Development Zone, the most innovative thing that people heard about was the Container Terminal, and despite of the fact that the Construction Company already existed, the port always caught my attention and I felt the need to be part of this team. I did not know the peculiarities of the sector, but I had the interest and also the desire of knowing.

This is how Yudalys Valdés Montalvo, specialist B in Port Activities, tells her first approach to our company. “I had already submitted forms in order to work at TC Mariel, when I knew that they were going to open an Expedition course, which I joined.” After 10 months they contacted her and she begins her journey in this group at the end of July 2015.

“I started in the documentation check-in- desk of the Expedition department, at the same time I also received a gate controller training. After three months, a facilitating check-in- desk was created to solve situations that could generate a long wait and I joined this function. Later, three supervisory positions were created in the Expedition department, and I had the opportunity to occupy one of these”, she points out.

In 2016, she was proposed to be part of the Customer Service, and from that moment on she has been working there. At this moment she is immersed in a general Operations training. “I have been fulfilling this task since last July approximately; I have a plan and I am training little by little, in the different areas of our direction”, she specifies.

“Being a woman is not a limitation to work in this industry. In fact, we have the presence of women in all the Operations spheres, except in the operation of the equipment itself. My aspiration is to continue growing professionally and gain more experience”.

She also mentions other activities carried out in the center. “Since 2016 I have worked as a secretary of my union section (Expedition and Tally), and I am also part of the Operations Expert Committee. These spaces have given me the opportunity to interact with workers from all areas, get to know them better and also know how they think”.

Regarding his main motivations, she states that “in each job that I have gone through, I am inspired to do it well, to be able to fulfill the assigned missions. I never say no; I like to prove myself. In fact, Customer Service has been a challenge and this is what I think. On the other hand, it helps you to have a great notion of the activity of the terminal, when interacting with dissimilar areas. Serving external and internal clients, explaining to them, helping them, convincing them if necessary, instructing them many times, it’s gratifying”.

Consecration to such a human mission

We thank our health personnel for their daily dedication, dedicating themselves to such a human mission, staying up in the most difficult moments no matter how tough the situation becomes. In these times marked by an atrocious pandemic the task is and also has been very intense.

The Orlando Santana Valdés teaching polyclinic, in Mariel, was authorized as a provincial care center for low-risk COVID-19 positive patients. There, Dr. Maikel Rafael Barrios Sánchez, a specialist in Comprehensive General Medicine, provided his services, joining the team in charge of ensuring the health of those who arrive at the medical institution. After a week of work, he complies with the established isolation period.

Meanwhile, Marisel Izquierdo Carta, known as Chachi, went to Mexico two months ago. From this country she faces the pandemic, this is her second internationalist mission with the same aim, because last year she was one of the collaborators of the Henry Reeve Brigade that extended solidarity to the Principality of Andorra.

Our deepest gratitude, to all our doctors and nurses, who constantly watch over our well-being.

Reference of an anniversary

On January 27th, the Container Terminal of Mariel S.A. celebrates its 7th anniversary.

With new challenges and purposes, this important port enclave adds another anniversary since the start of the operations constituted a starting point in the fulfillment of a mission permeated with commitment and dedication to the future of the Mariel Special Development Zone and the nation.

Convinced of the significant contribution made to the Cuban economy, the Terminal staff (more than 500 workers) focus themselves on guaranteeing the business results, adopting the hygienic-sanitary measures that are clearly defined in the confrontation of COVID-19, and strengthen the actions aimed at the Security and health at work.

This new year that has just begun for the port facility, is another opportunity for uniting wills in the achievement of each goal, with tenacity and perseverance, sure of the role to play in the provision of services, customer satisfaction, and the achievement of results that ensure continuous improvements, aimed at a sustainable development.
